There’s very few things we don’t know about the BlackBerry Priv, but it is also true the phone is like some kind of rare holy grail. Not many have laid eyes on it, directly, and even fewer have managed to get a detailed hands-on with it (I guess it’s that secure!). Needless to say we jumped out of our seats and started digging for whatever new or unknown information a recently published hands-on post may present to us.

The article comes from website derStandard.at, which managed to get the inside scoop on the device and somehow obtained a pre-production model before others. In essence, there isn’t much new information here. Most of the specs, characteristics and software details we already knew. What makes this coverage special is the information which pertains to the actual handling of the handset; build quality, dimensions, how the phone feels in your hand, etc.
Two-handed beast
One of the first things the writer mentions is that the phone is seemingly too large for any type of one-handed usage. Such is to be expected… I mean, this is a 5.4-inch screen smartphone, after all. And because it’s not exactly the thinnest phone around, it makes it a bit harder to wield.
A bit on the display
There wasn’t much about the display, but the little that was said seems pretty promising. The writer compares it to the LG G4‘s screen, with “vivid colors and good contrast”. He also makes mention of a feature that displays battery levels on the curved side of the screen, but it seems this capability hasn’t been applied yet. It’s probably something that will be around with the consumer version.
Build quality
According to derStandard, the phone is not exactly the most premium one around, but it makes up for this in comfort and functionality. The back is made of a rubbery material that makes it feel rather cheap, something you can get past once you feel that security of getting a good grip on the phone.
We can’t ignore that keyboard, right? It’s what had many of us praying for a BlackBerry Android smartphone, and now that it’s coming we have high expectations. The reviewer confirms the keyboard is definitely solid, and the slider mechanism seems to work smoothly. He does have one complaint; though it’s very easy to recognize the keys by touch, accidental presses are common due to the buttons’ sensitivity.
Underwhelming performance?
This is a part that may have some of us scratching our heads. While BlackBerry is not really skimping out on specs, it seems performance is not up to par with current generation flagships.
Not that the phone is slow – it actually seems to work rather well. It just seems to have stutters here and there, something that shouldn’t really be the case considering the specs. Antutu gives it a score of about 46,000, which puts it up there with the HTC One M8 and OnePlus One.
Those phones are not bad, but they are also previous generation smartphones. To our relief, this may be due to lack of optimizations. Let’s hope the finalized version does better. In short: it’s “powerful, but with lags”.
Camera!
So this is one of the parts most of us have been wondering about. BlackBerry handsets are not really known for their camera quality. Is this the case for the almighty Priv?
While the camera was good, it didn’t leave an overwhelming impression. It works best under direct sunlight, as it goes with most other smartphones. It’s said to provide “good detail and realistic colors”. The shutter gets significantly slower once light starts dimming, though.
Conclusion
Those are about the only new details we could get from the hands-on coverage. Overall, the phone doesn’t seem to impress people very much once they try it. Or at least that’s the way it seems for now. With this in mind, we must really consider if we want to purchase a BlackBerry Priv or not.
Who is this phone for? I suppose the main lure is its physical keyboard and secure elements. Are those factors enough to have you buy into the Black

21 year old stabs landlord too death in lagos
Some hoodlums started a street fight on Olorogun Street, Odo Eran, in the Itire area of Lagos State on Tuesday, during which a 21-year-old stabbed a landlord, identified as Alawu Lateef, to death.
PUNCH Metro learnt that Lateef, who was a father of three, had intervened in the fight, and asked the hoodlums to leave the area, when one of them, identified as Lati Elepo , stabbed the landlord.
It was gathered that the father of three slumped, while residents arrested Elepo before he could escape with the other hoodlums. The matter was said to have been reported at the Itire Police Division.
Our correspondent learnt that the hoodlums, numbering six boys, had come from Osindero Street to meet one Balogun, who they claimed owed them about N30,000.
It was learnt that when the hoodlums did not meet Balogun at home, they started to make trouble on the street.
The landlord, Lateef, who worked as a panel beater, was said to have asked
Elepo to leave the area with his gang members. The hoodlum, however, stabbed him in the chest.
Friends and family members rushed the landlord to a private hospital in the area, from where he was referred to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi Araba, where he was confirmed dead.
His corpse was afterwards brought to the Itire division.
When PUNCH Metro visited the area, one of his neighbours, who identified himself simply as Rashidi, said Lateef did not have any business with the miscreants, but only tried to pacify them when Elepo stabbed him on the chest.
Rashidi added that Elepo and two other suspects were arrested by the police.
He said, “It was at about 11am when these boys from Osindero stormed our street. They are teenagers. They are not cultists. They said Balogun owed them N30,000 which they must collect from him.
“Lateef did not want such commotion on the street. So, he came out to caution them to take things calmly. The one who stabbed him was drunk.
“While Lateef spoke with them, the suspect went to a shop of an artisan who sharpens knives and other metals, grabbed about three knives and stabbed Lateef on the chest. Resident arrested him and dragged him to the police station while other hoodlums ran away.”
The landlord’s wife was said to be too distraught to talk with PUNCH Metro as of the time of visit.
Another neighbour, who spoke on condition of anonymity said, “Lateef was a nice man. His wife gave birth to their third child just two months ago. If Balogun was around, Lateef would not have intervened in the rampage.”
Our correspondent gathered that policemen visited the street in the evening and raided other suspected hoodlums lurking in the area.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joe Offor, said he would get back to our correspondent on the incident.
He, however, had yet to get back as of press time.

According to reports, the number of people killed by suicide bomb blasts in the explosions has risen to 11. About 50 others were also wounded in the attack carried out by two female suicide bombers. The market was filled with shoppers and traders including children at the time of the blasts.

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Ibe Kachikwu, on Tuesday directed the Department of Petroleum Resources to seal off fuel stations found to be hoarding petroleum products and dispense the petroleum free to the public.
The Minister gave the directive after a working visit to some retail outlets in Abuja.
“I have instructed DPR that if they discover any fuel station involved in hoarding, they should sell the products for free to customers around there,” he
said. “It is not just sealing the station that is the answer. It is penalizing them when they do these things. I hope the message goes out loud and clear.”
Meanwhile, the Minister has scheduled a session on Wednesday with key operators in the downstream sector of the petroleum industry, namely the Major Marketers Association of Nigeria, Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association, as well as Jetty and Tank Farm Owners Associations.
The meeting is expected to mobilise the oil marketers across the country to cooperate with government to ensure speedy clearance of the fuel queues.
“I am getting all the majors to get involved and they must take charge of the situation. They must take
responsibility for all their filling stations. I have instructed the DPR and the Petroleum Equalization Fund and all the other agencies to work towards
the Fast track movement of petrol bearing trucks and vessels,” he explained.
Currently, he said there was enough supply of petroleum products by the Nigerian National petroleum Corporation, as about 38 million litres of
products haa been moved to various filling stations
across the country help resolve the crisis.
On the approved payment of N413 billion subsidy
claims to marketers, the minister confirmed that
President Muhammadu Buhari had since transmitted
a letter to the National Assembly for the approval of
subsidy claims.
The Central Bank of Nigeria, he assured, would soon
make the funds available to the marketers once
appropriated by the National Assembly.
The Minister also said there was no plan by the
government to reduce the price of petrol soon, adding that marketers should desist from hoarding fuel and make products available to the motorists.
To ensure that products become available to
consumers, the NNPC said figures from the daily
dispatch of petrol to depots across the country
showed that by Tuesday about 38.3 million litres of
petrol was dispatched by the Pipeline and Products
Marketing Company, PPMC across the country

Efforts of the Cross River State Governor, Prof. Ben Ayade to attract investments into the state received a major boost in far away China with a province, Henan, making a firm commitment to invest multi-billion dollars in the state.
The Henan Provisional Government unveiled its plans to invest in Cross River at a meeting between its Commissioner, Mr. Jiao Jinmiao and Governor Ayade in Zhengzhou. The planned investments include an industrial city where cars and spare parts would be manufactured.
The Chinese are also committed to building power plants, bonded warehouses and a distribution centre in the state. Plans for the development of a huge manufacturing base and modern infrastructures in the state were also firmed up.
Jinmiao also disclosed plans by his province to lead a delegation of about 100 companies to Cross River. The intention, he said, is to have these companies set up different industries in the state.
In a related development, the Cross River State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with some Chinese rr, led by China Machinery and Engineering Corporation (CMEC) to make Calabar the first smart city in Nigeria.
Ayade on behalf of Cross River State signed the MoU, while Mr. Wang Qingxin, the vice president of CMEC signed on behalf of his company.d
The agreement, which was signed at CMEC corporate headquarters in Beijing, China, seeks to make Calabar the first 4G smart city in Nigeria.

ABUJA— THE Senate, yesterday, directed the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, to begin to extend the validity of its results to a period of three years.
This was even as it ordered the board to immediately stop its policy of re-assigning candidates to schools they never applied to, saying such policy was contrary to the act establishing the board.
To this end, results obtained from the board by candidates seeking admission into universities are expected to last for three years.
The red chamber, which order came following a motion entitled: ”JAMB’s New Admission Policy, “ sponsored by Senator Joshua Lidani, APC, Gombe South, which was debated during plenary, also urged JAMB to consult widely with Parents Teachers Association, ASUU and all other stakeholders in the education sector with a view to coming out with a friendlier holistic, comprehensive and sustainable admissions policy.
It also directed its Committee on Education to enquire into circumstances surrounding the JAMB policy, including all allegations of favouritism and generally review the power of JAMB vis-a-vis administration and submit findings within one week.
Earlier, in his motion, Senator Lidani frowned at the JAMB’s policy of posting candidates to schools, including private universities whose fees, he noted, were beyond the means of the candidates’ parents or guardians, saying in some cases, candidate were posted to universities located far away from their places of abode thus placing additional financial burden on their parents.
Lidani expressed worry that although the Federal Ministry of Education had since suspended the implementation of this policy, JAMB was still going ahead with its implementation, thus creating more hardship for parents and uncertainty in the education sector.
He said he was concerned given that the policy runs contrary to the letters and spirit of Section 5(1)(C) iii of the JAMB Act, which according to him, requires that JAMB should take into account preferences of the candidates in their choices of schools and the subsequent confusion surrounding the directive that only candidates whose names were forwarded to the university by JAMB were eligible for post-UTME screening and others would have to go back to JAMB website to find out their new institutions.
Senator Lidani expressed concern that since the policy was announced, the board was faced with series of massive protests by parents and candidates of and some organizations like the Association of Tutorial School Operators of Nigeria as well as other numerous stakeholders.
He said JAMB, at its 2015 Combined Policy Meeting, held on July 14, 2015, in Abuja, announced the adoption of a policy whereby candidates of universities with surplus applicants for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations, UTME, were reassigned to other universities with lower number of candidates than their capacities.
While noting that JAMB was a board created by an Act of the National Assembly in 1989 to administer a centralized admission for universities, polytechnics and colleges of education in Nigeria.
He further noted that by Section 5(1) (C) iii of the JAMB Act 2004, the function of the board, among other things, was the general control of the conduct of the matriculation examinations for admission into all universities, polytechnics and colleges of education and also include the placement of suitable qualified candidates in the tertiary institutions having taken into account, the preferences expressed or otherwise indicated by candidates for certain tertiary institutions and courses.
