A middle-aged lady, Miss Faith Idehen, has been rushed to the Central Hospital Benin City, Edo State after sustaining a deep ear bite during a fight with the daughter of her landlord in the state.

Idehen, aged 23 years and a hairdresser at the Oba Market located in the heart of Benin City, had a raw deal with her landlord’s daughter simply identified as Vivian, who is a single mother of two, over delayed payment of N1, 500 electricity bill.

Investigation revealed Friday that the victim along with her mother and other siblings had occupied the two bedroom apartment belonging to the landlord at No: 2 Jesus Powerlane Off Ojo Street Ugbiyoko, when Vivian engaged her in a war of words over the matter.

Idehen was said to have left the compound in a commercial bus for her place of work at the Oba Market but was trailed behind by Vivian who swooped on her at the popular Yanga Market within the area, an action that resulted in a fierce fight that drew a large crowd of traders and passersby.

It was gathered that the landlord’s daughter demanded for the monthly electricity bill of N1, 00 from the tenant who pleaded with her for understanding after the later had paid N1,000 deposit with a promise to pay the balance of N500 when she returns back from work later in the day but the landlord’s daughter refused to listen.

The angered Vivian engaged her unsuspecting tenant in a fight and bit off Faith’s left ear which made her to faint in the process.

It took the intervention of sympathisers for the younger hairdresser to gain consciousness even as she bled profusely and was rushed to the hospital for treatment.

However, policemen attached to Oba Market Police Station were quickly invited who also arrested the landlord’s daughter.

Narrating her ordeal, Idehen said: “I didn’t know that I was being trailed even after I pleaded with her that I will pay the balance of N500 when I return from work.

The moment I alighted from the bus I heard someone calling Faith, Faith and immediately I turned, behold it was Vivian.
She grabbed my hair and started beating me and before I knew what happened I saw my ear dangling with blood gushing out. I

Remorseless Jerry Active, 26, continued to protest his innocence as he was sentenced for his sickening crimes.

The Alaska native bludgeoned Touch Chea, aged 71, and his 73-year-old wife Sorn Sreap to death at their Anchorage home in May 2013.

He also raped Sreap and the couple’s two-year-old great-granddaughter in a random attack which police described as one of the “worst thing they had ever seen in their lives”.

He was found guilty on 10 felony counts, including first-degree murder, multiple counts of sexual assault, sexually abusing a minor and robbery in April.

Police said he also sexually assaulted a 90-year-old woman, who died in June.

Active had been released early from prison just hours before the attacks, according to state officials.

He was set free on probation after serving part of a seven-year sentence for pleading guilty to breaking into an Alaska home in 2009 and sexually assaulting a child and other residents.

Alaska Dispatch News quoted Anchorage Superior Court Judge Philip Volland as saying: “Mr. Active’s actions will remain a scar on the community.

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) says it is not considering adopting a Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode for its examinations.

Its Head, National Office, Mr Charles Eguridu, made the clarification at an interactive forum with the Education Correspondents on Thursday night in Abuja.

Eguridu said it would amount to “intellectual dishonesty’’ for him to say that the council would introduce CBT in the next five years or the near future.

According to him, the purpose of education is to prepare people for life, not to pa$$ examinations; hence the need to examine different domains which CBT cannot accommodate.

“There is what we call the cognitive domain; that is what you have learnt that you can put in your head.

“There is also what we call affective domain that has to do with your emotions.

“There is also what we call the psychomotor domain that is skills which you can express using your hands and your body.

“I am yet to see any education expert who will tell you that you can measure the psychomotor domain using CBT.

“Any test that will use computer to evaluate who will be a good carpenter cannot be a valid test.’’

He said the examinations conducted by the council took into cognizance the three domains that measured ability to recall, apply and practicalise.

Eguridu said that in psychomotor domain, candidates did practical tests in agricultural science in the farm and the examiner supervised their actual agricultural practice.

He said that those doing woodwork were made to carry out physical designs of whatever woodwork a$$ignment they were going to do and evaluated on the outcome of their work.

The WAEC official said that even Netherlands where people went to learn CBT had yet to apply CBT in all its examinations.

He said, “In Netherlands which people emulate in CBT, they have not been able to migrate 40 per cent.

“How many schools in Nigeria have hardware? How many schools in Nigeria have the facilities to have those computers?

“There is the additional problem of electricity and internet connectivity.

“What JAMB is doing is commendable because theirs is an admission test; it is a certification examination.’’

Eguridu said that WAEC was using specialised gadgets in detecting examination malpractice as the device had ability to transmit any irregularity to its data base in Lagos.

He said that the council had started encrypting the data of candidates in their results to avoid falsification.

According to him, WAEC has not had any issue of examination leakages in the past five years.

The WAEC chief also said that the council had reversed itself on withholding of results of candidates in those states that owed it following appeals from the stakeholders.

He said that the council was still favourably disposed to granting such credit facilities to states being a service rendering organisation.

Eguridu urged the affected states to pay up their debts in order to keep the council running. (NAN
